α-FLASH®009 … High Performance Photoluminescent Path Markings

α-FLASH®009 is a High Performance Photoluminescent Path Marking that absorbs and stores light energy (l.e., sunlight and fluorescent light) and brightly releases such absorbed light in dark areas.

Electric emergency exit signs installed above doors were proved to be ineffective during the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks and the metropolitan subway fires in Daegu city, South Korea in 2003. Therefore, the city of Tokyo passed new regulations on April 2005 that would require Tokyo metropolitan subway stations to install Photoluminescent markings every 5 meters (approx. 16.4 ft.) on the floor and the wall that are no higher than 1 meter (approx. 3.28 ft.) off the ground (Low Locations*) by the end of the year 2007.
* Photoluminescent Path Markings placed in Low Locations provide visible and reliable signs for people to follow in total darkness in case of fire with dense smoke obstructing views to the Exit Signs.
Moreover, the Fire Department of Tokyo amended its safety standard regulations as of March 29, 2006 to add High Performance Luminescent guidance signs and standard performance Photoluminescent guidance signs in addition to the required electric emergency guidance lights and signs.
Q: How do you determine whether the Photoluminescent products are HIGH performance or standard performance?
A: According to the Japanese Industrial Standard, JIS Z8716, the performance level of a Photoluminescent product is determined by the following method:
Expose the Photoluminescent material under 200 luxes fluorescent light, D65, for 20 minutes. After shutting off the irradiating light energy, if the average brightness of the surface of the material is more than 24mcd/m², the material is classified as a standard Photoluminescent product. If the average brightness of the surface of the material is more then 100mcd/m², the material is ranked as a high luminescence product.
- α-FLASH®009 is classified as a HIGH Performance Luminescent material and the average brightness of the material is more than 100mcd/m².
